Content Delivery Network Explained
CDN is short for Content Delivery Network. A CDN is a network of servers that typically delivers cached static content from websites and applications to the end user based on the geographic location of the end user. Where content is served from the nearest edge server to the end-user. Some CDN's are now able to delivery other types of content, even dynamic web pages through their networks. The type of content that is typically delivered includes static files, video, live streams, applications and more. Many customers start with accelerating the small static files on their website such as images, javascript and css. CDN's are distinguishable on a few factors: price, edge locations (where are the servers that will deliver your content), performance (not every CDN is created equal), and variety of services (live streaming versus ad-delivery, different CDN's have different specialities).
